Data Center Software cohort's 'emerging bull' tag holds up — CRWD's plunge is a split artifact

Hypothesis Opus 5 · Research Sonnet 5 · Writing Sonnet 5 · Prompt v1.0

Seven of ten named tickers in the Data Center: Software, Observability & Cybersecurity bucket sit in bull bands as of July 28, and the security leg (PANW, OKTA, CRWD) is actually the strongest-performing sub-group once CrowdStrike's headline -58.9% three-month figure — a stock-split artifact, not a business break — is corrected for. The real laggards are seat-based ServiceNow and valuation-stretched Palantir, both still in strongly bearish bands despite intact fundamentals.

The split distortion behind CRWD's "crash"

The hypothesis's core worry — that a security leg "never turned" is dragging an turning bullish label carried by one or two data-platform outliers — doesn't hold up against the evidence. CrowdStrike's board approved a four-for-one forward stock split on June 3, effective July 2, 2026, which mechanically cut the reference price from roughly $767 to $194. The raw prices table shows CRWD's close falling from $701.09 to $185.73 across that window — a ~73.5% single-session move that is purely a division artifact, not a fundamental event. Post-split, the stock actually climbed to a new 52-week high near $199.53 on active volume, and CrowdStrike's own fundamentals — 97% gross retention, FY26 ARR of $5.25B (+22%) — were intact heading into the split.

The security leg is rallying, not lagging

Far from dragging the cohort, cybersecurity names led a coordinated rally: CrowdStrike, Palo Alto and Okta surged together in early July on analyst upgrades tied to AI-driven security demand. Palo Alto's fiscal Q3 revenue grew 31% YoY to $3.0B with NGS ARR up 60% to $8.13B, a quarter its CEO called a standout driven by accelerating AI-security bookings — shares are up roughly 78-113% over three months. Okta was upgraded to Overweight with its price target lifted to $171 amid the same wave. Signal-band data confirms it: PANW, OKTA, DDOG, DT, NET and SNOW all sit in strongly bullish bands as of July 28, with MDB in mildly bullish — seven of ten named tickers.

Consumption platforms are showing real AI monetization

The data-platform leg backs the "monetization layer" framing with more than price action. Datadog's shares jumped over 30% after Q1 revenue grew 32% YoY, prompting a Street move to Strong Buy consensus with a Truist $300 target, and its band history shows a sustained strongly bullish run since early May — not a one-day flicker. Snowflake's product revenue growth accelerated to 34% YoY, the fastest sequential dollar growth in company history, on Cortex Code adoption. MongoDB's Atlas consumption grew 26% YoY with management citing vector-search and AI-workload adoption as a forward driver.

The real laggards, and what's next

ServiceNow and Palantir are the genuine holdouts, both in strongly bearish bands — but for valuation and sentiment reasons rather than fundamental breaks. Palantir's ~49% drawdown from its November 2025 high came despite 85% YoY revenue growth and raised guidance. Two near-term catalysts will test the thesis directly: Palantir reports August 3, and Datadog reports Q2 results August 6.
